Defying Droughts
In the dry north-east of Ethiopia, livestock farmers are under constant pressure to reduce their livestock numbers when drought makes water scarce. To make the population more resilient, drought-resistant crops are being cultivated, vegetable crops diversified and austerity programmes introduced. Not only will access to drinking water be improved, but irrigation technology will also be improved so that food and animal feed can thrive better. All this is helping to ensure that the increasing droughts caused by climate change do not drive livestock farmers to ruin.
