Protecting Forests to Stop Desertification
A forest in northern Ethiopia prevents the Sahara from spreading southwards, but this barrier is being eroded by destructive exploitation and extreme climate events. Welthungerhilfe is helping to protect the forest by providing both professional training to authorities and practical support to the public. For example, solar power can replace firewood for cooking. In addition, afforestation is more successful when trees with commercial uses are planted or when there are alternative sources of income available, such as beekeeping or raising poultry.
